Yves Saint Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria on August 1, 1936. Yves Saint Laurent was an independent clothing stylist in Paris until he became a designer at the House of Dior where he eventually became Chief Designer in 1957, after the death of Christian Dior
In 1960 when he was called to serve at the French Military his career ended at the House of Dior, however when he finished his military obligation in 1962, and instead of going back to Dior, he founded his own firm, Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent gets his inspiration from history, art and literature and his rich fantasy peasant look of 1976 helped him become a household name all over the world
In January 2002 Yves Saint Laurent announced his retirement. Paying tribute to his mentors including Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Schiaparelli and Chanel. Yves Saint Laurent revealed that his decision was based on a disgust with an industry that had become ruled more by commercial gain than art. "I have nothing in common with this new world of fashion, which has been reduced to mere window-dressing," he said. "Elegance and beauty have been banished"
